TANZANIA SAFARI

Tanzania Safari

There are a lot of safari alternatives in Tanzania, and each safari park has a unique charm of its own. Generally speaking, you have to decide if you want to spend your safari vacation in Tanzania's north or south.

The Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, Tarangire, and the Serengeti are all located on the well-known "northern circuit." This region draws the greatest number of predators in Africa and is the stomping ground of the Great Migration of wildebeest. It is a hugely amazing place to see the big game. Nyerere National Park and Ruaha National Park are located on the more sedate "southern circuit." Although there is less game density here, there is something quite alluring about being "off the beaten track" in pristine wildlife areas.

Safari enthusiasts travel to western Tanzania to see the chimpanzees at Mahale and the untamed charm of Katavi, two parks with very low visitor numbers. Zanzibar, with its amazing beaches and intriguing history, is located just off the coast of Tanzania. Additional island choices are Mafia in the south and Pemba in the north, which are mostly popular vacation spots for scuba divers.

“The fascination of Africa, once it has gripped a man, never leaves him. The spell of the sun-drenched plains, the mystery of the silent bush, the thunder of mighty rivers, the crashing of unseen game in the tangled depths of the forest – all these things are but the outward symptoms of the hidden magic that draws men back to her again and again.” – Frederick Courtney Selous

June marks the beginning of the dry season, yet the park remains verdant and flourishing from the prolonged rains. Traveling in the later part of June provides the opportunity to see wildlife at a lower cost compared to peak season. The dry season gradually becomes stronger in the upcoming months, causing the vegetation to become thinner and attracting a large number of wildlife to the park, which leads to great conditions for viewing game. The Silale Swamps are bustling with constant sightings of large herds of elephant and buffalo.

The park continues to become more and more green as January conditions persist into February. Bird watching is fantastic and the weather is perfect for taking photos. In early March, evidence of the upcoming rains can be observed in the afternoon clouds, typically coming in around the middle of the month. Some camps shuts down during the rainy season due to difficult logistics caused by bad road conditions, and reopen in mid-May when the rains have stopped and the park is lush and in full bloom.

October is the final month of the dry season, providing optimal conditions for walking safaris and fantastic opportunities for spotting wildlife. In November, the short rains come, bringing renewal to the scenery and animals while reducing dust, ideal for photography. Migratory birds come, increasing the already substantial resident population. Vegetation in the park is green and has not yet become dense, providing great opportunities for game viewing with less crowd. January experiences warm and sunny weather, with brief showers at times, but mostly clear skies.

What are the best months to visit?

It is suggested to visit Tarangire in September and October for an amazing wildlife encounter with fewer visitors, as it is after the busy peak season. If you have a passion for photography and bird watching, the ideal months are November through February.
